Dear Third Grade Students and Families,
Welcome to third grade! We are looking forward to meeting and getting to know all of you this school year!
As the school year begins, we will spend time talking about our reading lives, authors that we admire, and genres that we love to read. Students will also explore the books in the classroom library, meet with reading partners, and form book clubs so that the third grade readers can share their thinking while strengthening their speaking and listening skills. We will also talk about our successes as writers and learn how to enhance and organize our thoughts, use figurative language and other forms of author’s craft, and research topics to help us grow as writers and even become literary essayists!
In math, get ready to learn multiplication and division facts, solve and create our own number stories, explore geometry, and plot fractions on number lines. Third grade students will also learn how to use mathematical language to explain our thinking so we know our answers make sense!
Third grade is also an exciting year for exploring and experimenting. In social studies, students will learn and create models of landforms as well as learn about the many oceans, continents and countries around the world! As “scientists,” the third graders will learn about inquiry tools, the scientific method, plant and animal cells, rocks and minerals, and more. They will even conduct experiments to test their hypotheses.
Now that you have a “sneak peak” into third grade, please take a moment to review the items listed on the supply list. We ask that each student bring these items on the first day of school along with an enthusiastic smile on their face!
We look forward to seeing everyone on September 6, 2016.
Enjoy the summer and we will see you all in the fall!
